Zilicus is a project management application for companies to use in controlling and monitoring every aspect of a project. It tracks time, project details, reports, assesses risk, and provides an interface for detailed project planning.
According to the founders, they worked together in the research and development department of an IT company, providing product lifecycle management solutions. They saw a need for a useful, comprehensive, and collaborative project management tool.
Zilicus was founded by Nagin Kothari and Dhan W on October 1, 2011. There is no site traffic information available and very little information about the founders.
The app appears to be very similar to other project management applications. There is no major difference, aside from pricing including specific space provisions for each plan, rather than each team member. They all provide similar statistics and management capabilities. Aesthetically, they are also very similar.
The founders state that Zilicus has more features that are more detailed and comprehensive than the competition.
The first impression a user gets upon visiting the site is the incredibly crowded landing page. There are designs in the background, multiple colors, large amounts of text, and basically a lot of information crammed into a small space. It is very overwhelming.
Once logged in, the user is introduced to the dashboard where they may change the password, if desired. This is the main area for monitoring all aspects of the Zilicus account. Tabs for Getting Started, Home page, Dashboard, Projects, Timesheets, Reports, and Admin are offered.
The Admin section is for adding users and updating details, assigning roles and job titles, and reporting. Users can also add an organizational heirarchy, manage Zilicus subscription, update company information, and monitor and/or upgrade storage space usage. Also in the Admin section, the user may create and manage custom field for projects, issues, and users. The Admin section is also the place to create a project, prepare a project plan, add or remove project team members, track and manage issues and risks, and view real time status of projects.
The Home screen shows recently viewed projects, pending tasks, to-do lists and timesheet alerts. Also incorporated into this area is a calendar and profile including photo, email, address, and other contact information.
The Dashboard shows data for projects such as resource utilization, tasks, time (including percent ahead or behind), issues, and progress (planned vs. actual).
The Project tab provides basic information on each project. Projects are broken down into overview, tasks, documents, issues, and risks. Each section can be added to or edited to reflect the current status of the project.
Users may enter their time spent on the project via the Timesheet tab. The Reports tab allows the user to view portfolio status, project variance, resource availability, and a timesheet report.
This is a very comprehensive program. In making it this comprehensive, there will be a learning curve in the time necessary to fully realize the potential in each piece of the program. Users must be prepared to learn to use each resource and put it into effect. The instructions are clear, but there will be an initial investment of time needed to learn the program.
A free trial with no credit card required is offered. Registration includes company name, first and last name of the user, email, country, time zone, and an area to copy a number (similar to a Captcha phrase). Once registration is submitted, URL and login password are sent to the email address provided.
The registration email is immediate and contains the Site URL, Login ID, and a password. It also contains links to a product tour, features, and help guide. Viewing the tour, the software looks quite complex.
The 30 day free trial allows users to experience the full featured Zilicus app without providing a credit card. When the trial is over, if the user does not provide payment information, all data will be deleted automatically.
The pricing system is as complex as the rest of the app. The monthly subscription for one person is $14.95 and includes 512MB of space. If paid annually, the user can save $29.90 and pay $149.50 for the year. The price increases incrementally, by $14.95 per month for each user.
Businesses who require a solution to monitor and administrate projects online may benefit from an all-in-one solution like Zilicus. While the homepage is crowded, the actual application is not terribly difficult to use. There is an abundance of information on how to use the app, but once learned, it would likely be easy to use.
The concerns are the amount of space assigned to each user and whether it is sufficient and the cost associated with the application. This is extremely comprehensive, which is a very good thing, however it will take time to learn and input information to use the app effectively.
